State Representative Doreen Carter is set to receive the Black History Award at the Defend Black History Summit in Atlanta. The event will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Loudermilk Conference Center.
The nomination for Rep. Carter came from two organizations: the National Education Association (NEA) and Color Of Change. The NEA represents various educational professionals, while Color Of Change focuses on civil rights advocacy.
Lisa Morgan, President of the Georgia Association of Educators, praised Rep. Carter's efforts: “Since being elected, Rep. Carter has been a fearless advocate and defender of public education.” She highlighted Rep. Carter's opposition to defunding public schools and her criticism of the Protect Students First Act, known as the divisive concepts bill.
Rep. Doreen Carter's work on the House Education Committee has been noted for its focus on defending public education and promoting accurate teaching of Black history in Georgia schools.
