Today, the application periods for agriculture relief funds in Georgia have opened. These funds are available through the Georgia Forestry Commission, SAFETY 24 Hurricane Helene Relief Loan Program, and The Weathered But Strong Georgia Hurricane Relief Fund. This announcement was made by Speaker of the House Jon Burns.
“Across Southeast Georgia, our farmers and timber producers are facing historic losses and devastation in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene,” stated House Speaker Jon Burns. He expressed gratitude to Commissioner Harper, Governor Kemp, Lieutenant Governor Jones, and other partners for securing this critical relief for those in need.
The Georgia Forestry Commission is accepting applications for two programs: the Hurricane Helene Fuel Mitigation (FMit) Program and The Forest Access Road and Firebreak Restoration Project. The FMit program aims to manage forest fuels resulting from Hurricane Helene to improve public safety and reduce wildfire risk. Applications for this program will be accepted until December 13, 2024.
The Forest Access Road and Firebreak Restoration Project offers clearing of forest debris at no cost to landowners. Applications for this project are open until December 6, 2024.
The SAFETY 24 Hurricane Helene Relief Loan Program by the Georgia Development Authority provides loans up to $500,000 at a fixed interest rate of 2% for farm operators affected by Hurricane Helene residing in FEMA-designated disaster areas or adjacent counties.
Additionally, The Weathered But Strong Georgia Hurricane Relief Fund is offering financial assistance to impacted farmers. Applications are evaluated based on disaster-related needs with a focus on those most affected. The deadline for applications is December 31, 2024.
