Today, Senator Nikki Merritt of Georgia expressed her condolences following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. Merritt, who chairs the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, issued a statement honoring Carter's legacy.

"My family and I extend my deepest condolences, on behalf of the 9th Senate District, to the Carter family and all who knew and loved him," she said.

Merritt praised Carter for his lifelong commitment to service. "President Carter embodied the values of service, humility and compassion. From his humble beginnings as a peanut farmer in Plains to serving as a state senator, Georgia’s 76th governor and the 39th President of the United States, President Carter consistently showed an unwavering dedication to bettering humanity."

She also highlighted his contributions after leaving office. "His post-presidency was equally impactful, and the legacy President Carter leaves behind is one of fierce dedication to public service, peace and the well-being of others."

Senator Merritt concluded with words of comfort for those mourning his loss. "While President Carter will be deeply missed, his impact endures in the lives he touched and the causes he championed. Our prayers are with the Carter family during this difficult time."

Senator Nikki Merritt represents Georgia's 9th Senate District in Gwinnett County.
