Traffic changes are set to occur on East Main Street (SR 74W), Barnesville Street (SR 36W), and South Bethel Street (SR 36) in Thomaston, Georgia. Contractors from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement a traffic shift starting February 24, 2025, as part of a project to convert the intersection into a roundabout.

The roundabout design aims to enhance safety by reducing collision points and eliminating right-angle and head-on crashes. The structure promotes lower vehicle speeds, allowing drivers more time to react. Additionally, it is expected to increase efficiency by reducing congestion through its yield-controlled design, leading to fewer stops and delays.

Roundabouts offer long-term cost savings by minimizing maintenance compared to traditional traffic signals. They also allow for landscaping opportunities that can improve aesthetics while reducing pollution, noise impacts, and fuel consumption.

Motorists should be aware that dates may change due to weather or other factors. Drivers are advised to expect delays and exercise caution when traveling through work zones. Real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511 or visiting the website 511ga.org.

The Georgia Department of Transportation oversees the planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways in Georgia. The department also supports local governments with road maintenance while focusing on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in transportation systems.
