State Representative Carl Gilliard of Savannah expressed his appreciation following the unanimous passage of House Bill 303, known as the Original 33 Memorial Act, in the Georgia House of Representatives. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Rep. Gilliard commented on the support received, stating, “I am so thankful for the unanimous votes in the Georgia House of Representatives.” He added, “Today we remember 33 Americans of whose shoulders we stand on. The Original 33 stood up so that we as legislators could sit down.”

The proposed legislation aims to establish a memorial dedicated to the Original 33, Black legislators who were expelled from the General Assembly after Reconstruction. The monument would be funded through private donations and placed either on State Capitol grounds or another significant location.

The next step for HB 303 is review by the Georgia State Senate.
