The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the awarding of eight projects aimed at construction and safety improvements in January. Among these, a previously deferred project was also awarded during the month.

The most significant construction investment from the January Letting is approximately $4.2 million, allocated for constructing a roundabout at the intersection of State Route (SR) 74 and SR 42 in Monroe County. The second largest project, valued at around $3.7 million, involves building a roundabout at SR 124 at SR 60 and Sam Freeman Road (CR 17) in Jackson County. This project includes installing an intersection video detection system.

These two projects, along with four additional construction initiatives—comprising three bridges and one more roundabout—constitute 82% of the total funds allocated, which amount to $18.6 million.

Additionally, a $3.9 million safety project focuses on improving intersections by installing a stop-controlled Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) intersection on SR 53 at Brownlee Mountain Road/Plainville Road in Gordon County. This safety initiative represents 18% of the allotted funds.

With these January awards, the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2025 now reach $1.27 billion. This total includes TIA, Design-Bid-Build, and locally administered projects for Fiscal Year 2025, which began on July 1, 2024.

Bids for Design-Bid-Build projects were received on January 17 and contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders on January 31.

A previously deferred project has been awarded as well, representing an investment of $36.5 million to widen and reconstruct nearly 2.4 miles of additional lanes on Bell Ferry Road in Cherokee County.

Contractors and consultants interested in bidding or performing work must prequalify with Georgia DOT through its website: https://www.dot.ga.gov/GDOT/Pages/DBE.aspx.

Georgia DOT oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways across Georgia while also being involved in various transportation programs including bridge work, waterways, public transit, railways, general aviation, biking paths, and pedestrian routes. The department aims to enhance Georgia's competitiveness through leadership focused on innovation, safety sustainability and mobility.
