Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue construction activities related to the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from February 28 to March 7, 2025. The project aims to enhance safety and mobility in the area, with several phases underway.
Lane closures and traffic shifts are scheduled from Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 7, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Flaggers will guide traffic on the I-16 eastbound exit ramp to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Coliseum Drive. Additionally, from Thursday, March 6 through Saturday, March 8, flaggers will direct drivers through a temporary detour as part of Spring Street near the I-16 interchange is closed for bridge demolition preparation.
Ongoing long-term closures include Spring Street's far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
Construction activities for February 28-March 7 include continuing work on bridge substructures and superstructures for various ramps and bridges along I-16 and I-75. This includes pouring bridge deck spans and edge beams on new structures, demolishing existing ramps, constructing new retaining walls along I-75 northbound and southbound, installing drainage structures throughout the project area, installing Riverside Bridge lighting, Walnut Street lighting over I-75, guardrails along both sides of I-75 northbound and southbound sound walls as well as visual barriers; evaluating remaining work items around Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard exit off Interstate highway system splits.
The $500 million megaproject involves widening/reconstructing interstates within seven design/construction phases expected completion by year-end decade mark -2030-. Once finished commuters/businesses regional travelers commercial freight movements benefit safer improved infrastructure connecting Georgia’s southern coast destinations statewide nationwide.
