Georgia's Attorney General Chris Carr said he supports President Trump's efforts to deport members of the "violent Tren de Aragua" gang. He criticized what he described as former President Biden's "border crisis," which he said failed Laken Riley, and emphasized ongoing efforts to prevent similar tragedies. Carr made these remarks in a March 19 post on X.

"Proud to work with POTUS to ensure that violent Tren de Aragua gang members are immediately deported," said Carr. "The Biden administration's border crisis failed Laken Riley, & we're fighting to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again."

Carr filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, supporting the Trump administration’s efforts to deport violent Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang members. According to Carr, TdA was originally formed in a Venezuelan prison and has since spread across the United States, including Georgia. The gang has been linked to crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and trafficking. The brothers of Jose Ibarra, who killed Laken Riley, have ties to TdA. Despite this threat, a D.C. federal judge blocked the removal of noncitizen TdA members, even those already in custody.

Carr and 25 other attorneys general argue that this order undermines national security and public safety by preventing the executive branch from exercising its legal authority to remove dangerous individuals. They contend that the district court overstepped its role by issuing a sweeping injunction without fully considering the government’s security interests.

"Tren de Aragua is a violent, Venezuelan prison gang responsible for brutal and heinous crimes, and its members who are here illegally should and will be removed – it’s common sense, and it’s the law," Carr said. "We commend President Trump for taking swift action to protect American citizens, and we will continue to stand with him to ensure the safety and security of our state and great nation," he added.

Chris Carr was appointed as Georgia's attorney general by then-Governor Nathan Deal in 2016 and was re-elected in November 2022. Since taking office, he has focused on addressing issues such as human trafficking, gang activity, and opioid misuse. This includes establishing the state's first Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit and Gang Prosecution Unit. Carr served as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development under Governor Deal from November 2013 to November 2016.
