The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has initiated a safety improvement project at the intersection of US 441 and SR 326 in Jackson County. The construction, which began on March 4, 2025, is expected to conclude by July 31, 2025, depending on weather conditions.
This initiative involves installing a Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) and U-turn configuration aimed at enhancing traffic flow and minimizing crash severity. The intersection has been recognized as high-risk due to its history of severe vehicle crashes. GDOT's implementation of the RCUT design seeks to decrease conflict points and eliminate hazardous left turns and cross-traffic movements.
According to GDOT, "RCUTs are proven to enhance safety by directing side-street traffic to make right turns followed by U-turns at designated locations." This approach aims to lower the chances of angle and head-on collisions, which tend to be more severe.
"The safety of Georgia’s road users is always our top priority," stated GDOT. "This project is a proactive measure to make this intersection safer and more efficient for everyone traveling through the area."
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adhere to posted signs during the construction period. GDOT expressed gratitude for public patience and cooperation as efforts continue to improve roadway safety in Jackson County.
