Macon-Bibb County's 2nd Street Bridge spanning Riverside Drive has been closed indefinitely following structural damage caused by a collision with an equipment truck. The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced plans for repair after a state inspector's evaluation highlighted issues with the bridge beams.

Though the bridge is shut to both eastbound and westbound lanes, Riverside Drive underneath the bridge remains open for traffic. Drivers are being directed by detours and signage.

"Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation."
