The Georgia GOP recount effort is calling out possible signature verification issues on ballots.
Georgia GOP Chair David Shafer said the number of rejected ballots is much lower this election than when compared to 2018.
“In 2018, when 230,000 absentee ballots were cast, 3.5% were rejected for signature mismatches or other reasons. In 2020, when more than 1.2 million absentee ballots were cast, the rejection rate fell to 0.3%. Did the massive increase in ballots overwhelm the verification process?” Shafer tweeted.
The state recorded a total of 4,992,709 votes cast in the latest reporting.
With only 14,172 votes separating them, the race was called today for Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
A recount and audit effort is underway in the state already.
Congressman Doug Collins, who is leading the recount effort for the Trump campaign, released a joint letter with Schafer pointing out several issues with the recount.
“Absent immediate revisions, the people of Georgia cannot have confidence that the hand count and audit were meaningful or delivered on the promised objectives,” the letter reads.
In addition to questioning the signature verification, included in their complaints are questions about monitors for the recount, the certification of the vote prior to completion of the recount and audit as lack of training on the recount efforts, including the proper handling of ballots.
