Former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker has officially thrown his name into the mix of Republicans seeking the nomination to run against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) in the upcoming U.S. Senate race in Georgia.
Walker is a friend of former Republican President Donald J. Trump, who encouraged Walker to run for Senate back in March, Fox News reported.
"I am just a kid from Wrightsville, Georgia, who has lived the American Dream," Walker wrote in a tweet where he also shared his first campaign video. "Now, I'm running as a Republican for the United States Senate to keep that dream alive for everybody."
His announcement came as welcome news for U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who shared the video along with an official endorsement for Walker. In her tweet, Greene said, "this is everything we know we are and everything we are fighting to protect."
Walker won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and a national championship for the University of Georgia in 1980, according to Fox News.
NBC News reported other Republicans who've entered the race include Kelvin King, Latham Saddler and current Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. In a tweet, Black welcomed Walker back to Georgia from Texas. He also wrote, "while you get reacquainted with life in our state, I'm ready to discuss the issues anytime, anywhere."
