As more families struggle to put food on the table because of the high costs associated with record inflation, faith leaders have teamed up in DeKalb County to help feed those in need.
A total of 5,000 boxes of groceries were available to be given out at eight locations in several areas of the county on May 21, a recent FOX 5 Atlanta report said.
"High food prices continue to plague working families and senior citizens struggling to keep food on their tables," Michael Thurmond, DeKalb County CEO, told FOX 5 Atlanta. "DeKalb County and our faith partners are holding this food distribution to help relieve that burden."
FOX 5 Atlanta reported the boxes included food staples such as fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs and 10 pounds of chicken.
Boxes were available on a first come, first served basis at locations including: New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain, Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, Big Miller Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, The Covenant Church in Decatur, Saint Phillip AME Church in Atlanta, Shy Temple CME Church in Decatur and the Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker.
Since 2020, more than 73,000 food boxes have been distributed in the county, the report said.
Money from the federal American Rescue Plan Act helped pay for the food that was distributed.
