Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed an impeachment inquiry against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, asking the House Judiciary Committee to launch an investigation into what she called his dereliction of duty and violation of border security laws.
"Blood is on the hands of Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas for refusing to secure our border and end this crisis," she wrote in a Tweet on July 23.
Taylor Greene's move comes amidst growing concerns over border security. In a July 7 news release, she emphasized the urgency of addressing the issues surrounding Mayorkas's actions, which she claims have compromised the safety and sovereignty of the nation. Greene accused Mayorkas of "aiding and abetting the invasion of our country" by intentionally allowing the influx of drugs, terrorists, and illegal immigrants from more than 160 countries, according to the release.
In a House resolution issued June 6, the stated purpose of the impeachment inquiry is to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable and shed light on the concerns expressed by the American people. Greene wrote that elected officials should act in the best interests of the nation, and the inquiry seeks to ensure a thorough examination of the evidence to uphold principles of transparency and accountability, the resolution stated.
The current crisis has been particularly concerning, she wrote, stating that, "300 Americans die every day from Chinese-made, Mexican cartel imported fentanyl being smuggled across the border," sharing a video of Congressional testimony in her post.
The impeachment inquiry is a significant move by Greene in seeking a probe into Mayorkas's alleged violations of border security laws and dereliction of duty. If the Committee on the Judiciary finds sufficient grounds for impeachment, it could lead to further actions to address the issue, the resolution stated.
"Congresswoman Greene remains steadfast in her commitment to fighting for the security and well-being of the American people," the release added.
