A recent survey reveals that one in three Georgia voters identify rising housing costs as a primary contributor to inflation. This survey, conducted by the League of American Workers (LAW), shows housing costs as the second major concern after escalating food prices. Among the voters who highlighted housing costs, 74% believed that the American Dream was increasingly unattainable for most people in the state.

According to a study by North Star Opinion Research and published by LAW, independents were more likely than any other party affiliation to believe that the American Dream was out of reach. The margin among independents stood at 67 to 30 percent, compared to 59 to 37 percent among Democrats, and 59 to 38 percent among Republicans.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) underscores the growing concern over housing costs. According to BLS data, the shelter index rose by 6.2 percent from December 2022 to December 2023.

The BLS further reports that in December 2023, housing costs in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area had increased by 4.8 percent compared to December 2022. Over this same period, shelter costs rose by 5.7 percent.

According to Zillow Home Values Index, as of December 31, 2023, the typical home value in Georgia stood at $315,612 - a significant increase of 55.3 percent since January 2020.

Founded in 2022, LAW conducts research and develops proposals for public policies impacting American workers and their economy.
