Atlanta, GA – Governor Brian P. Kemp, alongside key state officials and lawmakers, has signed a comprehensive package of education legislation aimed at enhancing the education system in Georgia. The legislation includes SB 233, which provides greater freedom and choice in education for Georgia students in underperforming schools.

Governor Kemp emphasized the importance of the new legislation, stating, “There is nothing more important to the continued success of our state than safeguarding and strengthening the lives, education, and future of our students.” He credited Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, Speaker Jon Burns, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones, and Senator Greg Dolezal for their dedication to prioritizing education in Georgia.

Among the key provisions of SB 233 is the creation of a Promise Scholarship, offering $6,500 for each eligible student to be used for qualified education expenses. The scholarship aims to provide opportunities for students in underperforming schools, with priority given to economically disadvantaged students.

In addition to the Promise Scholarship, the legislation allows students to attend public schools outside their resident system without needing approval and increases the tax credit for donations to the Georgia Foundation for Public Education. Governor Kemp also signed six additional pieces of education-related legislation, each addressing various aspects of the state's education system.

One of the bills, HB 409, introduced measures to enhance student safety, including increasing penalties for passing stopped school buses. The bill was passionately advocated for by Ashley Pierce, the mother of Addy Pierce, whose tragic death spurred the legislative action.
