ATLANTA (May 29, 2024) — Sen. Chuck Payne (R–Dalton) has been appointed to Chair the Senate Study Committee on Veterans’ Mental Health and Housing by Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. The committee will also include Sen. Ed Harbison (D–Columbus), Sen. Josh McLaurin (D–Sandy Springs), Sen. Shawn Still (R–Johns Creek), and Sen. Rick Williams (R–Milledgeville).

This committee will address the critical issues facing Georgia’s veterans, particularly in the realms of mental health support and housing accessibility. Many veterans struggle with chronic injuries, physical disabilities, addiction, mental illness, and other issues stemming from their service. According to a recent federal study by the Housing Assistance Council, approximately 40,000 veterans in Georgia live in poverty, with nearly 700 experiencing homelessness. Committee members will recommend solutions to expand access to vital resources and services for veterans and their families post-service.

Sen. Payne expressed his gratitude for the appointment, stating, “I’m deeply honored to have been appointed as Chairman of this much-needed study committee by Lt. Governor Burt Jones. While there is no doubt that we can never repay Georgia’s veterans for their sacrifices, we will strive to ensure that they receive the support and resources they deserve through the work of this committee.”

Under Senator Payne’s leadership, the Senate Study Committee on Veterans’ Mental Health and Housing is committed to evaluating the adequacy of both public and private programs and services available in Georgia.

This study committee was created through the passage of Senate Resolution 527. More information about the committee’s work and upcoming meetings can be found here.

Sen. Chuck Payne serves as the Chairman of the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee. He represents the 54th Senate District, which includes Whitfield and Murray County, as well as part of Gordon County. He may be reached at 404-463-5402 or by email at chuck.payne@senate.ga.gov.
