ATLANTA – State Representative Farooq Mughal (D-Dacula) expressed gratitude to Gwinnett County voters for approving two homeowner property relief referenda on the May 21, 2024 ballot: House Bill 711 and House Bill 748. These measures will provide tax relief by doubling the homestead exemption for all homeowners and offering additional tax relief for school, law enforcement, hospital, and military personnel.
On the same day, a majority in Gwinnett County voted to approve the incorporation of the proposed City of Mulberry under Senate Bill 333. Rep. Mughal co-sponsored this legislation. City council elections are scheduled for November 2024.
“Gwinnett County has experienced year-over-year record increases in homeowner property values leading to a significant rise in the tax burden on our residents,” said Rep. Mughal. “The passage of these bills, marking the first property tax relief referenda in the county in 36 years, is a crucial initial step toward reducing the tax burden for homeowners and taxpayers and making homeownership more affordable in Gwinnett County."
He added, "I also commend Gwinnett County residents for exercising their democratic right to choose their form of local governance by approving the referendum to incorporate the City of Mulberry. I remain committed to continuing bipartisan efforts to address our communities’ desire for lower taxes and to ensure that voters feel their voices and opinions on local policy matters are heard.”
