The City of Hawkinsville has been awarded a grant of $2,260,505 through Governor Brian Kemp’s Rural Workforce Housing Initiative. The funds will be used for essential infrastructure improvements in road, water, and sewer systems to facilitate the construction of 58 new single-family housing units at the 220 McCormick Avenue Subdivision.

Senator Larry Walker III (R–Perry) expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “This is a tremendous win for Hawkinsville and the hardworking families who call our community home.” He highlighted that the funding would enhance access to affordable housing and boost the local economy by providing stability for workers. Walker also praised Governor Kemp and the OneGeorgia Authority for their dedication to rural Georgia.

The project involves collaboration between public and private entities. The City of Hawkinsville is contributing $70,000 while Hive Construction is investing an additional $124,000. Together with state support, these contributions bring the total project cost to over $2.45 million.

Walker emphasized the importance of such collaborations: “This project is an example of how public and private collaboration can address critical workforce housing needs.”

Governor Kemp first introduced the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative in his 2023 State of the State Address as part of a strategy to meet housing demands in growing rural areas. Supported by funding from the Georgia General Assembly, this initiative aims to sustain economic growth across Georgia.

The development at 220 McCormick Avenue Subdivision is expected to provide high-quality, affordable housing options benefiting local families and employees in Hawkinsville. These efforts are consistent with Georgia's goal to create vibrant communities statewide.

Senator Larry Walker III serves as Secretary of the Senate Majority Caucus and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Insurance and Labor. He represents Senate District 20 which includes several counties in Georgia.
