State Representative Jordan Ridley has introduced House Bill 35 in the Georgia legislature. The bill aims to revise the compensation structure for private attorneys appointed as District Attorney Pro Tempore.

Rep. Ridley stated, "This legislation would further the House’s commitment to keeping the citizens of Georgia safe." He emphasized that improved compensation would encourage private attorneys to serve when a district attorney is absent or disqualified. "When police arrest citizens, we must ensure that we have prosecutors who can handle their cases in a timely fashion and thus make sure the guilty are convicted," he added.

The proposed bill outlines that private attorneys acting as substitutes could receive $250 per certified hour worked or 90 percent of a district attorney's monthly salary. Additionally, these attorneys would be allowed to hire private counsel, paralegals, or legal clerks, with compensation capped at $110 per hour. The executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia would certify all compensations.
