The Georgia General Assembly reconvened on January 13, marking the start of the 2025 legislative session and a new biennium. Senator Freddie Powell Sims expressed her commitment to her roles within several Senate Committees, including Education and Youth, Regulated Industries and Utilities, Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Appropriations, Interstate Cooperation, Natural Resources and the Environment, and Urban Affairs.
Governor Brian Kemp's State of the State address highlighted priorities such as pay raises for teachers, state employees, first responders, strengthening healthcare workforce access to affordable healthcare, expanding quality public education opportunities, investing in renewable energy solutions, and addressing affordable housing needs. "These priorities are essential for creating a Georgia where every family can thrive," stated Sen. Sims.
Despite weather challenges affecting Senate District 12 last week that led to postponing "Budget Week," significant progress has been made through joint committee meetings. Sen. Sims acknowledged the Albany Chamber of Commerce for its contributions to Southwest Georgia's economy during a recognition at the Capitol.
Senator Sims co-sponsored several legislative initiatives this session. Among them are Senate Bills 53 and 54 by Senator Emanuel Jones aimed at increasing public education on safe firearm storage and establishing a state-wide database for reporting school safety threats. "Addressing gun violence is vital not only to the well-being of our students but to all Georgians," she emphasized.
Senator Freddie Powell Sims continues her representation under what is commonly referred to as the Gold Dome with encouragement for constituents to share their ideas and concerns toward building a stronger Georgia.
