State Representative Dale Washburn from Macon has introduced House Bill 225, aiming to ban the use of speed cameras in school zones. This bill seeks to repeal House Bill 978, which was passed in 2018 and permitted the deployment of such cameras.
Rep. Washburn stated, "It is time to do the right thing and ban these cameras." He argued that while the initial intent behind these cameras might have been positive, they have not improved safety in school zones. "They do not enhance public safety," he added. Instead, Washburn claims they have become a source of revenue for local governments and out-of-state companies at the expense of Georgia residents.
Washburn expressed gratitude towards his colleagues in the House who support this legislation, noting that it has garnered backing from 100 representatives, constituting more than half of the House members.
The current legislation under HB 978 allowed for traffic monitoring through cameras in school zones. If passed, HB 225 would eliminate this provision and prohibit camera usage in these areas.
