Senate President Pro Tempore John F. Kennedy has introduced Senate Bill 123 to tackle chronic absenteeism in Georgia schools. The issue, which has been increasing across the state, affects students' ability to succeed both academically and personally.

"For far too long, absenteeism has affected our communities and inhibited Georgia students from reaching their full potential," said Sen. Kennedy. "This legislation will enable local school districts to identify and implement protocols that directly address this issue, get our chronically absent students back in the classroom and ensure they have the necessary resources to build a foundation for future success."

Between 2019 and 2023, the number of chronically absent students in Georgia doubled. In 2024, nearly 360,000 students missed more than 10 percent of school days. Current laws on absenteeism have not been updated for 18 years.

SB 123 aims to address this by prohibiting expulsions solely due to absenteeism, requiring local districts to adopt supportive policies, and mandating attendance review teams report progress to the General Assembly. These measures are intended to improve student attendance statewide.
