State Representative Floyd Griffin has expressed strong opposition to the proposed job cuts at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The proposal aims to reduce 80,000 positions within the department, raising concerns across political lines.
Griffin, a Democrat from Milledgeville and a retired senior combat officer, highlighted his personal understanding of the challenges veterans face upon returning home. He criticized the current administration's approach, stating that it underscores their stance on those who have served in the military. "The recent announcement of plans to cut 80,000 jobs from the VA sparks concerns from veterans and Americans from all sides of the aisle," he remarked.
He argued that cutting funding and jobs at the VA would exacerbate existing issues within the department and leave veterans without necessary care and benefits. Griffin urged for action that would bolster funding instead of diminishing it, emphasizing that while Americans may support reduced government spending, it should not come at the expense of veterans' livelihoods and health.
Griffin called for unity in addressing these challenges rather than deepening divisions. He also urged U.S. Secretary Doug Collins to thoroughly evaluate any changes before implementing them to ensure they prioritize veterans' well-being. "U.S. Secretary Doug Collins should carefully consider and evaluate these changes before acting on them," he said.
