The Georgia House of Representatives has unanimously passed House Bill 423, a measure designed to improve emergency communications across the state. The bill was sponsored by State Representative Will Wade, who serves as a Floor Leader for Governor Brian Kemp.

"This is a critical step toward modernizing our emergency response systems and ensuring that we are equipped to handle the needs of our communities in a rapidly evolving technological landscape," stated Rep. Wade. He emphasized the importance of the legislation in enhancing public safety and aligning with national efforts to standardize emergency response systems.

House Bill 423 empowers the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority (GECA) to procure infrastructure necessary for implementing Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) services throughout Georgia. The bill mandates new 9-1-1 systems to adhere to wireless enhanced standards, allowing citizens to send text messages, photos, and videos directly to emergency responders.

If enacted into law, this technology aims to reduce response times and improve outcomes during emergencies by making communications more efficient and effective. Additionally, HB 423 proposes updates to GECA’s responsibilities, an expansion of its board of directors, and revisions in the role of its executive director.

The bill now awaits consideration by the Georgia State Senate.
