State Representative Carl Gilliard from Savannah has expressed approval following the House's unanimous decision to pass House Bill 465, known as the Autism Missing Person Alert System Act. This legislation, which Rep. Gilliard sponsored, proposes adding autism to the list of conditions eligible for activation under Mattie’s Call, a statewide alert system used to locate missing individuals.
Rep. Gilliard stated, "Yesterday marked a significant step forward in our commitment to the safety and welfare of individuals with autism and their families." He emphasized that this new alert system is modeled after Mattie’s Law, which has been effective in safeguarding vulnerable community members. The goal is to ensure rapid and coordinated action when an individual with autism goes missing.
House Bill 465 aims to include autism spectrum disorder among the conditions that can activate Mattie’s Call for missing disabled adults. The bill outlines procedures for local law enforcement, such as focusing searches on waterways and public roads and identifying specific autism-related behaviors that may help find the missing person. The objective is clear communication about the status of a missing individual with autism to mobilize community assistance effectively.
Rep. Gilliard added his appreciation for the bipartisan backing received by saying, “I am grateful for the bipartisan support this bill has received.” He highlighted how cooperation between lawmakers, advocacy groups, and law enforcement underscores the initiative's importance. "This alert system is not just a legislative win; it is a commitment to compassion and community responsibility," he concluded.
The bill now awaits Senate consideration before potentially being sent to the Governor for final approval.
