State Representative Eric Bell from Jonesboro has introduced House Bill 464, a legislative proposal aimed at protecting individuals who seek help from law enforcement as victims of certain crimes. The bill intends to prevent these individuals from being prosecuted for unrelated offenses.
Rep. Bell emphasized the importance of creating an environment where victims feel safe to come forward without fear of prosecution. "We must create an environment where victims feel safe coming forward without the threat of prosecution hanging over their heads," said Rep. Bell. "HB 464 is a step toward building trust between law enforcement and communities, ensuring that no one is afraid to seek help when they need it most."
The proposed legislation seeks to shield individuals from prosecution for unrelated offenses when they report being a victim of a crime. It also aims to encourage victims, especially those in vulnerable situations, to seek justice without fear of legal repercussions, thereby fostering better cooperation between law enforcement and the community.
"The bill reflects a growing consensus among lawmakers, legal advocates and community organizations that protecting victims from prosecution encourages a more just and equitable criminal justice system," added Rep. Bell. "HB 464 would provide immunity for prospective offenders who come forward as victims of specific crimes, eliminating the fear of prosecution when seeking help. By removing legal barriers that discourage victims from reporting crimes, this legislation aims to enhance public safety and promote justice for all Georgians."
The bill will be discussed today during the Hong Subcommittee of Judiciary Non-Civil meeting at 3 p.m., or after the House adjourns, in room 132 of the Georgia State Capitol.
Rep. Bell urges the public to reach out to their legislators in support of this initiative.
