The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced the awarding of a $36.5 million contract for the widening of Bells Ferry Road in Cherokee County. The project aims to expand the highway to two lanes on each side and will include a raised median. Construction is anticipated to begin in late spring or early summer, with completion expected by October 31, 2028.

In addition to the expansion, several Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs) will be installed at various intersections along the route. Other intersections will remain under traffic signal control. The construction work will cover an area extending from Southfork Way approximately 2.4 miles to Victoria Road.

"Increasing capacity is important for a road that carries so much traffic volume," stated GDOT District Six Engineer Grant Waldrop.

Motorists traveling through this area are advised to anticipate delays and exercise caution by reducing speed in work zones. For real-time updates on construction progress and traffic conditions, drivers can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or use the Georgia 511 app. GDOT assures that its maintenance and project teams continue their essential work while adhering to health guidelines related to COVID-19.
