I-16/I-75 interchange improvements in Macon-Bibb County set for next week

Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from March 14 to March 21, 2025. The construction activities are contingent upon weather and on-site conditions.

From Tuesday, March 18 through Thursday, March 20, lane closures and traffic shifts will occur between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night. Law enforcement vehicles will slow traffic on I-16 eastbound between the interchange and the exit at Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard/Coliseum Drive as crews work on a newly constructed bridge over the exit off-ramp.

There are ongoing long-term closures affecting Spring Street's far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp, which has been relocated to the far left lane.

The scheduled construction activities include:

Phases 4 and 5: Work continues from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek with ongoing construction of bridge substructures and superstructures for entrance and exit ramps, new Second Street bridge substructure, two new I-16 eastbound bridge substructures, pouring deck spans and edge beams on new structures, demolition of an existing ramp to I-16 eastbound, construction of retaining walls along I-75 northbound and southbound, as well as installation of drainage systems throughout the project area.

Phase 2 and 3: Along I-75 from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound, lighting installations continue at Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street. Construction of sound and visual walls along both directions of I-75 is also underway.

Phase 1: Evaluation is ongoing for remaining work items from the split at I-16/I-75 to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.

This $500 million megaproject aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing sections of I-16, I-75, their interchange in Macon-Bibb County through seven phases that extend until 2030. Once completed, it promises improved lanes, upgraded bridges, better drainage systems among other enhancements benefiting local commuters as well as regional travelers.
