Contractors working on behalf of the Georgia Department of Transportation are set to continue the construction activities for the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from April 11-18, 2025. Scheduled construction, dependent on weather and on-site conditions, will include traffic pacing measures near MLK/Coliseum on I-16 to facilitate the continuation of the project.
Traffic pacing is planned each night from April 14 through April 18, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with law enforcement vehicles involved to moderately reduce travel speed along specific portions of I-16. Motorists should anticipate these pacing measures on I-16 eastbound between the I-16/I-75 interchange and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive, as well as on I-16 westbound stretching from US 23/Ocmulgee East Boulevard to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive.
Several lane closures are ongoing, including long-term closures on Spring Street at the I-16 westbound on-ramp, which remains closed for several months while entry to I-16 westbound has shifted to the far left lane.
Throughout the week, construction activities include continued work on bridge substructures and superstructures, retaining wall construction, the installation of drainage systems, and lighting on Riverside and Walnut Street bridges, among other tasks. The construction efforts are part of larger phases meant to contribute to safety and improvements to the mobility in the area.
This comprehensive project, valued at $500 million, is anticipated to finish by 2030. It aims to broaden and overhaul key sections of I-16 and I-75, enhancing travel safety and mobility for local commuters, regional travelers, and commercial freight. The project includes expanding interstate lanes, upgrading bridges, and implementing enhanced drainage systems.
Motorists are reminded to anticipate delays and urged to remain cautious and adhere to reduced speed limits through construction zones. For updates on traffic conditions and construction progress, travelers are encouraged to check Georgia DOT resources through the Georgia 511 service.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to overseeing the plans, construction, and maintenance involved in state and federal highway systems, as well as additional transportation infrastructure projects aimed at ensuring safety, mobility, and sustainability throughout the state.
