Gov. Brian Kemp called out Democrats for ignoring the election "fiasco" in New York City while attacking Georgia election integrity law.
Gov. Brian Kemp made a statement calling out Democrats for the voting "fiasco" in New York City as Georgia faces a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justic over the state's new election law.
Democrats and Republicans remain divided after the Department of Justice announced the lawsuit against S.B. 202 on June 25, which Republic backers call an election integrity law and Democrats claim violates civil rights.
"Not a word from national Democrats on the election fiasco in the nation’s largest city as they continue to spread lies and attack secure, accessible, fair elections in Georgia," Kemp said on Twitter.
The new law places restrictions on absentee ballots and removes some of the ballot dropoff boxes.Voters will be required to show ID to vote rather than a signature match, Fox 46 said.
While Republicans say the law is fair and was put into place to prevent voting fraud, Democrats believe the new stipulations are a form of voter suppression, Fox 46 said.
"Where we believe the civil rights of Americans have been violated, we will not hesitate to act,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said, Fox 46 reported
Garland said he believes the new law is a violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and targets Black voters specifically, the station reported.
“The President and his administration, Stacey Abrams and their far-left allies have lied about the election integrity act from the beginning. This is the truth, SB 202 ensures that Georgia elections are secure, accessible and fair. It expands access to early voting, it ensures drop boxes are available in every county and secured around the clock,” Kemp said, Fox 46 reported.
