University of Georgia football players Nolan Smith and Adonai Mitchell have been honored as Southeastern Conference players of the week, according to a Sept. 20 press release.
This is the first time that Mitchell, a freshman receiver, and Smith, a junior linebacker, received a weekly award for their performance.
"Smith was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week," the release said. "He shares this week's honor with Alabama linebacker Will Anderson. Mitchell was named the SEC Freshman Player of the Week."
Smith, a Savannah, Georgia, native, forced a fumble in the third quarter of Georgia's recent game against South Carolina, allowing the Bulldogs to score their fifth touchdown of the game, the release said.
Mitchell, a Missouri City, Texas, native, set a career-high with four receptions for 77 yards and his first career touchdown while playing for the Bulldogs, according to the release.
The week before, senior quarterback Stetson Bennett was named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, according to 95.5 WSB. Bennett, a native of Blackshear, Georgia, tied a school record with five touchdown passes and finished the game 10-for-12 for 288 yards, 95.5 WSB reported.
Earlier in September, senior safety Christopher Smith was the SEC Defensive Player of the week and senior nose tackle Jordan Davis earned the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week award and was the SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week.
