Inflationary concerns and the COVID-19 pandemic have not prevented Georgia’s economy from growing, as the state’s revenue has kept humming along for a decade, an economic report indicates.

Much of that is attributed to a strong forestry industry, which the governor noted as he announced the news.

“Georgia continues to lead in all areas of the economy, including the critical forestry industry that provides, or is a part of, so many of the everyday items we use," Gov. Brian Kemp (R) posted on Facebook Jan. 18. "It is no surprise that revenue has leaped for the 10th year in a row.”

The Enterprise Innovation Institute at Georgia Tech recently published its annual report. It shows the total economic output of the forestry industry in 2020 rose to $39.1 billion, a 7.1% increase over the previous year. Forestry provided the state with $706 million in tax revenue in 2020, according to AllOnGeorgia.

“Georgians benefit tremendously from keeping our forests healthy and productive,” Georgia Forestry Commission Director Tim Lowrimore told AllOnGeorgia. “Our goal is to keep this precious resource sustainable for every person -- in the new year ahead, and for generations to come.”

The forestry industry is also profitable for its workers. Wages and salaries in forestry totaled $9.1 billion in 2020, a 5.8% increase over the previous year.
