Brock Bowers, a University of Georgia Bulldogs national champion, has been named the fourth annual Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman of the Year, as well as the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year.
"Congratulations @brockbowers17 on being named the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year," the Bulldogs said on Twitter.
Bowers, originally from Napa, California, makes history as the first Bulldogs player to earn the FWAA award, along with being the first tight end to ever do so, the Bulldogs reported on their site.
"Today's football is about creating matchup advantages for the offense and there's no bigger matchup advantage than Brock Bowers," Chris Doering, a Southeastern Conference Network football analyst, told SportsWriters.
Bowers was a critical part of the offense for the national champs, finishing the season with a team-high 56 catches for 882 yards and 14 touchdowns, the Bulldogs reported.
"Bowers was in the conversation for best tight end in college football despite being a true freshman this past season," Pro Football Focus reported. "With the help of his speed, explosiveness and ball skills, Bowers is already a college football star."
