Devens Joins MGA As Director Of Communications

Welcome

Middle Georgia State University recently issues the following announcement.

Rick Devens, an experienced broadcast journalist and producer, has joined Middle Georgia State University (MGA) as communications director, part of the institution’s Office of Marketing & Communications.

In his new role, Devens will direct MGA’s internal and external integrated communications strategy and implementation, which includes media, website, social media, and digital/print publications.

Devens was an anchor and reporter for WGXA from 2006 to 2019, when he took a leave of absence to be a contestant on the 38th season of Survivor: Edge of Extinction on the CBS network. He placed 4th out of 18 contestants that season, which was filmed in Fiji over the course of seven weeks.

“I’m excited to become a Middle Georgia State Knight and begin a new phase of my career,” said Devens, 37. “My time on Survivor provided me with a lot of opportunities in other parts of the country but my wife and I are committed to this region. This is where our kids were born and it’s where we want to raise our family. To be part of the MGA family is the cherry on top.”

Originally from Blacksburg, Va., Devens is a 2006 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications/journalism. He started at WGXA as a promotions producer, later becoming sports director and, most recently, morning anchor and reporter.

Macon-Bibb County proclaimed May 21, 2019, “Rick Devens Day” after his appearance on Survivor. He has spent part of his post-Survivor time making public speaking appearances, supporting charitable organizations (including Give Kids The World and Central Georgia Alzheimer’s Association), creating and hosting podcasts, and growing social media accounts, some with tens of thousands of followers.

Devens and his wife, Becca Devens, are parents to daughter Juliet and son Jack. They live in Macon.
