State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver of Decatur has announced a proposed bill aimed at requiring liability insurance for owners of assault-type weapons in Georgia. This legislation is set to be introduced during the 2025 legislative session, which begins on January 13.
The proposal seeks to make gun owners financially accountable for any harm caused by their firearms. Rep. Oliver stated, "If an individual decides to purchase and own an assault-type weapon, Georgia law should require that they ensure the weapon for the damage it may cause."
Rep. Oliver emphasized the role of the insurance industry in defining risks and costs associated with these weapons, aiming for a preventive approach to misuse. She described this initiative as "a commonsense approach that encourages responsibility and accountability," with potential benefits in reducing violence and enhancing public safety.
Under this proposed legislation, all owners of assault-type weapons would need to carry a minimum of $1 million in liability insurance. This coverage is intended to assist victims affected by injury, death, or property damage resulting from such firearms.
The formal introduction of this legislation will occur at the start of the upcoming legislative session next year.
