State Representative Kim Schofield of Atlanta has co-sponsored House Bill 87, a legislative proposal aimed at mandating health benefit policy coverage for medically necessary orthotic and prosthetic devices. The bill seeks to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by ensuring access to essential medical devices.

Rep. Schofield emphasized the transformative nature of the legislation, stating, “This legislation is life-transforming. It is about empowering individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive and improving their overall quality of life. No one should have to struggle to afford the medical devices they need to work, move and live with dignity." She further highlighted that as Georgia advances towards a more inclusive healthcare environment, this bill represents a significant step in guaranteeing all residents have access to necessary resources for independent living.

House Bill 87 would require insurance providers to cover prosthetic and orthotic devices deemed medically necessary by physicians. The development of this bill involved collaboration with the Georgia Society of Orthotists and Prosthetists and includes specific guidelines for customization, training, and ongoing support for users of these devices.
