Governor Kemp announces tort reform plan with wide-ranging support

Governor Brian Kemp has announced a plan aimed at reforming tort laws and stabilizing insurance costs in Georgia. The announcement, made during a crowded press conference at the Gold Dome, was described by AJC Political Reporter Greg Bluestein as "one of the most crowded press conferences I’ve seen in years."

The proposal has garnered support from various leaders and organizations across the state. Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones expressed his consistent stance on fostering a business-friendly climate to maintain Georgia's position as a top state for business. He stated, "We have to work together to ensure that we put families and consumers first by tackling the hidden costs we all pay thanks to Georgia's current tort laws."

Senator John F. Kennedy highlighted how the current legal environment affects job creators, saying, "@GovKemp’s tort reform legislation will level the playing field in our courts and stabilize costs for families and consumers." House Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones also emphasized the potential benefits of lawsuit reform on insurance costs.

Support extends beyond political figures to industry groups such as the Georgia Hospital Association, whose president Caylee Noggle applauded elected leaders for supporting reforms that aim to improve healthcare access and patient safety.

Chris Clark of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce remarked on curbing lawsuit abuse to protect families and businesses. Similarly, Katie Kirkpatrick from Metro Atlanta Chamber acknowledged Governor Kemp's commitment as crucial for addressing challenges faced by businesses.

Business leaders like Marsha Poorak from Southern Electric Company voiced strong support for Kemp’s efforts, citing broad industry backing. The Georgia Child Care Association pointed out rising insurance premiums affecting childcare centers and endorsed civil justice reforms.

Organizations such as the Georgia Restaurant Association, Georgia Health Care Association/Georgia Center for Assisted Living, and others echoed their support for Kemp’s legislative package aimed at creating a fairer legal system.

The proposed reforms are viewed as necessary steps towards ensuring economic growth and maintaining Georgia's competitive edge across various sectors.
