Governor Brian P. Kemp has appointed Josh Lamb as the new director of the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS). Lamb steps into the position following the departure of former director Chris Stallings.
"I'm honored to welcome Lt. Col. Lamb to GEMA and thank him for stepping into this important leadership role that is critical to the safety and recovery of Georgia's communities, especially as we continue to rebuild from Hurricane Helene and other storms," said Governor Brian Kemp. "I know Lt. Col. Lamb is committed to that mission and will provide the leadership necessary to ensure our state is prepared to respond to disaster and proactively keep Georgians safe."
Lamb previously served as Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Public Safety, overseeing areas such as Professional Standards, Human Resources, Public Information, Public Safety Support, and Legislative Affairs since October 1, 2023. His career in law enforcement began in 1996 with the Tri-Circuit Drug Task Force after earning a bachelor's degree in justice studies from Georgia Southern University.
His extensive experience includes roles within the Georgia State Patrol, SWAT team membership for eight years, lieutenant in Planning and Research Unit where he developed policies and organized major events like Super Bowl LIII.
Lt. Col. Lamb holds a master's degree in public administration from Columbus State University and attended both the FBI National Academy's 259th Session and served as an FBI executive fellow.
Governor Kemp also expressed gratitude towards Mike Smith for his service during this transitional period at GEMA/HS: "Marty, the girls, and I also want to thank Mike Smith for his service during this recent transitional period and for his continued leadership as GEMA Chief of Staff."
Lt. Col. Lamb resides with his wife Alison and their two daughters Kenley and Karson.
