State Representative Carl Gilliard of Savannah has expressed his support for the unanimous passage of House Bill 762 in the Georgia House of Representatives. The bill aims to establish the Savannah Music Commission, which seeks to promote and enhance the local music scene while benefiting the entertainment and music industry in Savannah.
“This is a monumental step forward for Savannah and the entire music community,” said Rep. Gilliard. “The establishment of the Savannah Music Commission will not only elevate local artists and musicians but also enhance Savannah’s reputation as a vibrant cultural hub, driving tourism and economic growth in our region.”
House Bill 762 proposes creating a body focused on addressing the needs of Savannah's music industry. The commission would promote musical events, support musicians, and foster collaboration among artists, venues, and the community. It would also develop programs highlighting Savannah's musical heritage while attracting new talent and events.
Rep. Gilliard believes that the commission's impact will extend beyond local artists by strengthening the music industry and increasing economic activity. This could create jobs in sectors such as hospitality, event planning, and tourism. The commission is expected to encourage investments in local venues and music-related businesses, further establishing Savannah as a musical destination.
“We envision a future where Savannah’s streets are alive with music, drawing visitors from near and far to experience our unique culture,” added Rep. Gilliard. “The overwhelming support for HB 762 underscores the importance of music in Georgia’s cultural fabric and the potential for growth in the state’s entertainment landscape. This commission will empower our local artists and foster creativity in ways that benefit not just musicians but the entire community.”
The bill now awaits consideration by the Senate.
