The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced the commencement of a pedestrian improvement project at the intersection of State Route 53 and State Route 9, surrounding the historic courthouse in Dawson County. Construction began on March 17, 2025, and is projected to last about six weeks, contingent on weather conditions.
To minimize disruptions for local schools and manage daytime traffic volumes, construction activities will occur exclusively at night. The project includes installing concrete medians, new sidewalks, flashing pedestrian beacons, milling and resurfacing of the roadway, and a truck apron around the courthouse. These enhancements aim to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow in this busy area.
Backbone Infrastructure, LLC has been awarded the contract for this project and will oversee its execution. GDOT expressed gratitude to residents and motorists for their patience during this period and advised drivers to exercise caution when traveling through the nighttime work zone.
