The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a reduction in the speed limit on State Route 316 from 65 mph to 55 mph in Barrow County. This change is part of ongoing construction efforts near Barber Creek Road and SR 211/Bethlehem Road, within the city limits of Statham. The reduced speed limit will be in effect until further notice and affects both directions of traffic.

This alteration is associated with the installation of temporary barrier walls for bridge construction at the mentioned roads. According to Georgia DOT, these concrete barriers will narrow traffic lanes, impacting flow during this construction phase. The project is one of several planned improvements along SR 316, stretching from SR 20 in Gwinnett County to SR 10 in Athens, Oconee County.

"The at-grade crossings will be replaced with grade-separated (overpass bridges) diamond interchanges with a single-lane roundabout and new frontage roads to help reduce the severity and frequency of crashes," stated Georgia DOT. The completion of this construction is expected by 2028.

Motorists are advised to "reduce speed, stay alert, and exercise caution while traveling through work zones," as workers and heavy construction equipment will be present at all times. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be placed at each end of the project to inform the public of ongoing work.
