Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff is refusing to release information regarding controversial payments to his foreign film company.
Ossoff’s company was linked to payments from a Chinese-backed media giant, which was discovered in September. Ossoff has refused to release any further information regarding the payments, which was requested by The Washington Post.
When Ossoff updated his financial report, it showed that he received at least $5,000 from PCCW, which is a media corporation partially owned by the Chinese Communist Party.
Ossoff also received at least $5,000 from Al Jazeera, and told The Washington Post that the company was a respected news organization. Ossoff has said that he has negotiated directly with Al Jazeera English.
Al Jazeera has been criticized for its footage regarding Osama bin Laden after the Sept. 11 attacks in which it put him in a favorable light.
After amending his financial report, Ossoff’s campaign blamed a paperwork oversight for the discrepancy.
Ossoff’s campaign originally said the company received less than $1,000 from PCCW in 2018, the news media reported
The Washington Free Beacon also requested to review the documents regarding the payments, but, instead of providing the requested documents, Ossoff’s campaign directed the news media to a review of the company’s 2018 quarterly payments done by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The campaign said the 2018 records included the only transactions between TWI and PCCW.
Republican David Perdue, who currently holds the U.S. Senate seat for Georgia, said in October that Ossoff’s acceptance of the funds from communist China explained where his money really came from.
Ossoff purchased TWI, which is based in London, in 2013 after receiving a large family inheritance. He has previously refused to say how much he inherited.
Ossoff faces off against Perdue in a run-off election on Jan. 5 for Perdue’s Senate seat.
