Today, Jon Burns was re-elected as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives for the 2025-2026 legislative session. Burns, a Republican from Newington, has held the position since 2023 and is the state's 75th Speaker.
"I am incredibly grateful to my colleagues in the House for their continued trust and confidence," said Speaker Jon Burns. "Over the last two years, we have worked together to pass meaningful measures that have lowered taxes, brought historic opportunities to our state, supported our families and businesses, and driven Georgia forward. We will continue to prioritize policies that uplift every Georgian, and continue to make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family."
The role of Speaker involves serving as the presiding officer of the legislative body. The Speaker determines leadership and membership of House committees and assigns legislation to committees during sessions. Additionally, they call legislation for debate and enforce House rules.
Burns represents Georgia's 159th House District which includes Screven County along with parts of Bulloch and Effingham counties. He first joined the House of Representatives in 2004.
