Changes in leadership to the University of Georgia’s men’s basketball program mean Tom Crean will not return for his fifth season as the Bulldog’s head coach.
Josh Brooks, J. Reid Parker director of athletics, said Crean demonstrated unquestionable effort and enthusiasm in what he attempted to accomplish at Georgia, but the university expects to compete for the post-season in all 21 sports and a change was needed, according to a March 10 press release.
"I would like to sincerely thank Coach Crean and his family for their commitment to Georgia Basketball," Brooks said in the release
Georgia finished 6-26 overall and 1-17 in the Southeastern Conference this season, the release stated.
Over his four seasons at the university, Crean finished with a 47-75 record and was 15-57 in SEC play, according to the release. Crean signed six top-100 prospects during his first full recruiting cycle, including Anthony Edwards who left after his freshman season to become the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and helped the Bulldogs break their all-time total attendance record in each of his first two years.
A national search for the team's next head coach will begin immediately, the release stated.
