Covenant College Athleticsrecently issued the following announcement.

Covenant men's basketball and golf head coach Neal Young announced his decision to step down as he departs the college to take the head men's basketball coaching job at Ohio Northern University.

Young, the 16th men's basketball head coach in program history, spent five seasons with the Scots and guided the program to a 79-47 (.627) record and three USA South West Division regular season titles. In his tenure, Covenant went 53-22 (.707) in conference play and the Scots advanced to the USA South Tournament championship game twice.

"These last five years serving alongside Neal have been a great joy and I'm incredibly thankful for the impact Neal and his wife, Maggie, had in the basketball program, athletic department, and campus community," said Covenant director of athletics Dr. Tim Sceggel. "While I'm disappointed to see Neal leave, I'm excited to see what God has in store for him as he takes the next step professionally. Neal's impact has been so big that it is hard to measure, and for that I'll be forever thankful."

Young was the 2018-19 USA South Coach of the Year after he took the Scots to a West Division regular season championship and set the conference record with 16 league wins. His teams totaled 18 wins in a season three times, while the 2021-22 squad set the program record for winning percentage going 18-7 (.720). Each of his five teams had a winning record, continuing a current program-record streak of seven consecutive winning seasons.

During his time with the Scots, Covenant had seven All-USA South selections and 15 USA South All-Academic honorees. Will Crumly was an All-American in 2018-19 and later became a four-time All-USA South selection with two Player of the Year accolades, and was a four-time D3hoops.com All-Region honoree, and three times on the NABC All-District team. Young's teams also garnered four USA South Team Sportsmanship awards.

Young departs the program as the leader in career winning percentage (.627) and third in all-time wins (79). He also served as the head golf coach for two seasons.

A new head coach will be announced in the coming days.
