State Representative Michelle Au of Johns Creek has been awarded the Government Service Award by the American Medical Association (AMA). This accolade is one of the most esteemed recognitions for elected officials and government employees.
“It’s an incredible honor to receive the AMA Award for Outstanding Government Service,” said Rep. Au. She emphasized that while many physician legislators serve across various states and political spectrums, they share a common goal: “to serve the people who need our help, especially when that help is needed the most.”
Rep. Au previously served in the Georgia State Senate from 2021 to 2023, marking her as the first East Asian member and first Asian woman in that body. During her tenure, she was named 2022 State Legislator of the Year by Everytown/Moms Demand Action for her efforts on gun safety. Additionally, she was recognized as Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for advocating children's health in Georgia.
A second-generation Chinese-American, Rep. Au's parents immigrated to the U.S. in the 1960s. She holds a B.A. in psychobiology from Wellesley College and an M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, with residency training in pediatrics and anesthesiology. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Columbia University.
