Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from February 21 to February 28, 2025. The activities are subject to weather and site conditions.
From Monday, February 24 through Friday, February 28, lane closures and traffic shifts will occur between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Flaggers will manage traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Coliseum Drive at the I-16 eastbound exit ramp.
Several ongoing long-term closures remain in effect. Spring Street's far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp is closed, as well as the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
Construction activities for this period include continued work on bridge substructures and superstructures for various entrance and exit ramps, installation of drainage structures, and construction of new retaining walls along I-75.
Phases 4 and 5 focus on areas from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek with multiple bridge constructions underway. Phases 2 and 3 involve lighting installations over Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street along with sound wall construction along I-75. Phase 1 involves evaluation of remaining work items from the split at I-16/I-75 to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million project aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing portions of I-16, I-75, and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County through seven phases until completion in 2030.
Motorists should anticipate delays due to these works, exercise caution in work zones, reduce speed when necessary, and check real-time traffic information via GDOT resources before traveling.
"The Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways," GDOT stated. "We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs."
The department emphasized its commitment to "delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility" while boosting "Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation."
