The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the opening of a new travel lane on I-16 westbound between Chatham Parkway and I-95. This development is part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety.

A significant aspect of this project is the expansion of I-16 between the I-95 and I-516 Interchanges. The current roadway will increase from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. The new westbound lane on I-16 will be opened to traffic progressively from Wednesday, February 26, through Friday, February 28. The opening will begin at the I-16/I-95 Interchange and move eastward toward Chatham Parkway.

Drivers should anticipate intermittent lane closures daily along this section, excluding peak travel times from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The improvements are expected to benefit one of Georgia’s busiest freight corridors by reconstructing the interchange at I-16 and I-95 in Chatham County. These changes aim to enhance operational efficiency and safety for both passenger cars and trucks while easing congestion.

Furthermore, the projects are set to add new lane miles that will accommodate approximately 100,000 vehicles in metro Savannah. By 2030, these additional lanes are projected to reduce delays on I-16 from I-516 to I-95 by over 30% and improve mobility for first responders.

Motorists should be aware that exact timing may vary due to weather conditions, with possible intermittent traffic pacing as well as lane and ramp closures within the work zone. Drivers are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, remain alert, and watch for workers.
