The contractor responsible for reconstructing the Interstate 75 interchange at Exit 11/State Route (SR) 31 in Lowndes County is preparing to shift traffic to newly constructed roundabouts. This transition is planned for March 6, though the date may change. The roundabouts are set to replace the existing ramp terminal traffic signals at the SR 31 intersection.
The reconstruction project, which began in 2022, aims to improve operational efficiency and enhance safety. It is anticipated to be completed by late May. Throughout construction, the interchange has remained open, eliminating the need for an off-site detour. The project is funded through a combination of federal, state, and Transportation Investment Act (TIA) resources, with construction costs estimated at approximately $37 million.
Exit 11 will not be the first I-75 interchange in Lowndes County to incorporate roundabouts at ramp terminals. In 2022, Exit 2/Lake Park Bellville Road became southwest Georgia's first interstate interchange with roundabouts.
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), roundabouts can reduce crash types that result in serious injuries or fatalities by 78-82% compared to intersections controlled by stop signs or traffic signals. This reduction is attributed to fewer conflict points among vehicles and slower-moving traffic within roundabouts, which decreases the likelihood of severe injuries if crashes occur. Roundabouts also help maintain smooth traffic flow.
Navigating a roundabout involves simple rules: vehicles already inside have the right of way and do not need to stop; drivers waiting to enter should yield and proceed when safe. Additional information and instructional videos about roundabouts are available on the Georgia Department of Transportation's website.
"The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia's economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment."
